Located in the Indian Ocean, Reunion Island is only a short 4-hour flight with Air Austral, there are no visa requirements and a visit is guaranteed to have South Africans hooked on the ultimate island experience.

The Liberté Métisse Festival is hosted in December annually on Reunion Island and welcomed its 8th edition in 2017 which celebrated Mozambique with an underlining theme which celebrated the importance of freedom, diversity and coexistence. The Liberté Métisse Festival is one of the largest of many cultural events and has seen a growing influx of visitors since its inception in 2010. Visitors vary from people across the island to international cultural enthusiasts looking to celebrate the diversity that characterises Reunion Island.

One of the most celebrated events on the Reunion calendar, the festival commemorates the abolition of slavery, effortlessly demonstrating the island’s diversity through interactive storytelling, artistic showcases, educational seminars and music performances aimed at celebrating cultures from continents including Africa, Europe and Asia.

The three days of the Festival Liberté Métisse, or the festival of cultural heritage, is a unifying event that celebrates Reunion Island as a land of freedom and a place where a combination of cultures live together harmoniously.  A celebration of an island that surprises all who visit, with its natural beauty, diversity of landscapes and attractions, and where the local people proudly embrace their uniqueness, diverse customs and island way of life.

With Reunion Island as backdrop for the Festival, visitors will be left wanting to return again and again. With close to half of the island classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and covering a total area of more than 2500km², Reunion Island is the ultimate destination for discovery, diverse scenery, a vibrant culture and thrilling activities.  A jewel waiting to be discovered!
